DermaVue SmoothX is the laser hair reduction programme we built when we ran out of patience with what Kerala patients were being offered elsewhere. For more than a decade we watched South Indian women, and increasingly men, rotate between therapist-run IPL chains, salon waxing, and threading, and arrive in our dermatology clinics with the same set of complications: post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation around the upper lip, stubborn underarm darkening from years of friction-driven trauma, ingrown follicles, and a slow loss of confidence in anything labelled “laser.”

SmoothX is the answer to that pattern. It is a clinically supervised programme delivered exclusively at the seven DermaVue dermatology clinics across Kerala and Coimbatore, built around three non-negotiable elements: a US-FDA cleared three-wavelength diode laser; a calibrated treatment protocol designed specifically for the Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin types that dominate our population; and a supervising MD-DVL dermatologist registered with the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists in the room for every session, not in a back office, not on a consultation phone line, in the room.

The clinical case for SmoothX is straightforward. Selective photothermolysis at wavelengths chosen for Indian skin, 810 nm (25 %), 940 nm (25 %) and 1060 nm (50 %) delivered together through a single combined applicator, targets melanin inside the hair follicle while sparing the surrounding epidermal melanin that defines South Indian skin. Our SmoothX handpiece does not include Alexandrite (755 nm) at all, the device is configured for Indian skin without it because the shorter wavelength is too shallow and is known to cause surface burns on Fitzpatrick IV–VI skin. The right wavelengths, at the right fluence, with the right pulse duration, with active sapphire contact cooling, is the difference between a procedure that delivers 75–85 % long-term reduction across nine to twelve sessions and a procedure that leaves you with a darkened upper lip and a refund request. Salon-grade IPL, the multi-wavelength light source still being marketed as “laser” across India, cannot make that distinction on dark skin. We do not use it. We never have.

The delivery vehicle is our existing seven-clinic dermatology network. SmoothX patients get the same medical record, the same clinical expertise, and the same well-trained staff at every clinic. Because the same patient may be seen by different dermatologists across our seven locations, your complete clinical chart and protocol travel with you, so the standard of care does not change with the doctor on duty. That continuity, laser as part of a dermatology relationship rather than as a one-off salon transaction, is the second reason outcomes at SmoothX are consistently better than what a technician-only chain can deliver.
