Ablation ≠ Resurfacing

What is CO2 Laser Ablation?

CO2 laser ablation uses a focused carbon dioxide laser beam to vaporize targeted skin lesions layer by layer. Think of it as a laser scalpel — precise, controlled, and targeted at a specific growth or lesion.

This is fundamentally different from fractional CO2 resurfacing. Ablation targets and removes a specific lesion (like removing a growth with a laser scalpel). Fractional CO2 resurfaces broad areas of skin by creating thousands of microscopic columns for texture improvement and scar treatment. Same laser platform, very different applications.

At DermaVue, the diagnosis comes first. Before any lesion is ablated, your dermatologist performs a thorough clinical and dermoscopic evaluation. Some lesions require biopsy before removal. This ensures the correct treatment and rules out concerning features.

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia in a sterile environment. Wound care instructions and follow-up are integral parts of the treatment plan.

Treatable Lesions

What Can CO2 Ablation Treat?

CO2 ablation is effective for a range of benign skin lesions — but only after proper dermatologist diagnosis. Not every lesion is suitable for ablation.

🔵

Seborrheic Keratoses

Common benign growths that appear as waxy, stuck-on brown or tan lesions. CO2 ablation vaporizes them precisely with excellent cosmetic results.

Syringomas

Small, firm bumps typically around the eyes caused by eccrine sweat duct overgrowth. CO2 ablation offers controlled removal with minimal scarring.

🟡

Xanthelasma

Yellowish cholesterol deposits around the eyelids. CO2 ablation can precisely remove these deposits. Recurrence is possible and lipid levels should be checked.

🔘

DPNs (Dermatosis Papulosa Nigra)

Small, dark papules common on the face in darker skin tones. CO2 ablation removes them effectively; post-inflammatory pigmentation is monitored.

🦠

Warts (Selected)

Recalcitrant or resistant warts that have not responded to other treatments. CO2 ablation destroys the wart tissue. Recurrence monitoring is important.

Skin Tags & Other Benign Lesions

Various benign growths including skin tags, milia, and selected nevi (after diagnosis). Each lesion is evaluated individually before treatment.

The Process

How CO2 Ablation Works

  • 1

    Diagnosis & Evaluation

Your dermatologist examines the lesion clinically and with dermoscopy. Diagnosis is confirmed. If needed, biopsy is recommended before ablation to rule out concerning features.

  • 2

    Anesthesia & Preparation

Topical or injectable local anesthesia is applied depending on the lesion size and location. The area is cleaned and prepared under sterile conditions.

  • 3

    Laser Ablation

The CO2 laser is used to vaporize the lesion layer by layer with precision. The laser energy is absorbed by water in the tissue, allowing controlled removal with minimal damage to surrounding skin.

  • 4

    Wound Dressing

Appropriate wound dressing is applied. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided including wound cleaning, ointment application, and sun protection requirements.

  • 5

    Healing & Follow-Up

Healing takes 1-3 weeks depending on depth and area. Follow-up appointment to assess outcome, monitor healing, and address any pigmentation changes.

Advantages of CO2 Ablation

Benefits of Laser Ablation

CO2 ablation offers several advantages over other lesion removal methods for appropriate cases.

🎯

Precision

The CO2 laser allows layer-by-layer ablation with sub-millimeter precision. Only the targeted lesion tissue is removed, preserving surrounding healthy skin.

🩸

Minimal Bleeding

The CO2 laser coagulates blood vessels as it ablates. This results in a relatively bloodless procedure compared to surgical excision or electrosurgery.

🪡

Usually No Sutures

Surface and raised lesions can be ablated without cutting into deeper tissue. This means no sutures are usually required and healing occurs by secondary intention.

Good Cosmetic Outcome

For superficial lesions, ablation often results in lighter scarring than surgical excision. The controlled nature of the laser allows even treatment of the wound bed.

Patient Selection

Who Is CO2 Ablation Right For?

CO2 ablation is appropriate for patients with benign skin lesions that have been properly diagnosed by a dermatologist. Good candidates include:

  • Patients with diagnosed benign lesions — seborrheic keratoses, syringomas, DPNs, xanthelasma, skin tags
  • Patients with surface or raised lesions that are amenable to vaporization
  • Patients seeking cosmetic improvement from visible benign growths
  • Patients who can follow wound care instructions and attend follow-up
  • Patients who understand the healing period and possible pigmentation changes

Diagnosis Before Removal — Always

No lesion should be ablated without proper diagnosis. Some lesions that appear benign require biopsy for histopathological examination. Your DermaVue dermatologist will evaluate each lesion with clinical examination and dermoscopy before recommending treatment. If biopsy is needed, surgical excision (which preserves tissue for analysis) may be recommended instead of ablation.

Comparing Removal Methods

CO2 Ablation vs Surgical Excision

CO2 Laser Ablation

  • Precise laser vaporization of lesion tissue
  • Minimal bleeding due to laser coagulation
  • Best for surface and raised lesions
  • Usually no sutures required
  • Lighter scarring for superficial lesions
  • Does not preserve tissue for biopsy

Surgical Excision

  • Full-thickness removal of lesion and surrounding margin
  • Allows biopsy and histopathology
  • Better for deeper lesions requiring margin assessment
  • Requires sutures — linear scar
  • Gold standard when diagnosis must be confirmed
  • Definitive removal with tissue analysis

Your dermatologist will recommend the right method based on lesion type, location, and diagnostic needs. Book a consultation for evaluation.

Safety & Expertise

Dermatologist Diagnosis & Sterile Procedure

CO2 ablation at DermaVue is performed exclusively by board-certified dermatologists (MD DVL). The most important safety measure is not the laser itself — it is the diagnosis that precedes it.

Every lesion is evaluated with clinical examination and dermoscopy before any ablation decision. If there is any diagnostic uncertainty, biopsy is recommended first. This ensures that lesions requiring histopathological analysis are not inadvertently vaporized.

The procedure is performed under sterile conditions with appropriate local anesthesia. Structured aftercare — including wound care instructions, sun protection guidance, and scheduled follow-up — is an integral part of the treatment to minimise complications and optimise healing.

Cost Information

CO2 Ablation Cost Factors

Cost depends on the number of lesions, size, depth, and treatment area. An exact quote is provided after dermatologist evaluation.

  • Number of lesions — multiple lesions can be treated in one session
  • Lesion size and depth — larger or deeper lesions require more laser passes
  • Treatment area — facial lesions may require more precise, conservative settings
  • Biopsy requirement — if pre-ablation biopsy is needed, this is an additional step

Consultation fee: ₹300. Exact procedure cost confirmed after dermatologist evaluation.

Common Questions

CO2 Laser Ablation — FAQ

  • CO2 ablation targets and removes specific lesions — like a laser scalpel vaporizing a defined growth. Fractional CO2 resurfaces broad skin areas by creating thousands of micro-columns in the skin for texture improvement, scar treatment, and skin rejuvenation. They use the same laser platform but for very different purposes.
  • Some degree of marking is possible depending on lesion depth and location. Superficial lesions often heal with minimal visible change. Deeper ablation may leave a subtle flat scar or pigmentation change. Proper wound care minimizes scarring.
  • For certain lesion types, dermoscopic evaluation or biopsy may be recommended before ablation to rule out concerning features. Your dermatologist will assess each lesion and determine if diagnosis can be made clinically or if histopathological confirmation is needed first.
  • Typically 1-3 weeks depending on the treatment area and ablation depth. Facial lesions tend to heal faster. Wound care instructions are provided, including keeping the area clean and protected. Sun protection is important during healing.
  • CO2 ablation can treat seborrheic keratoses, skin tags, syringomas, dermatosis papulosa nigra (DPNs), xanthelasma, selected warts, and other benign lesions — always after proper dermatologist diagnosis. Not all lesions are suitable; some require surgical excision for biopsy purposes.
  • Local anesthesia (topical or injectable depending on the lesion) is applied before the procedure. Most patients report minimal discomfort during treatment. Mild stinging or warmth may be felt. The procedure is generally well-tolerated.
