How well you follow aftercare in the 14 days after each session is the single biggest
patient-controlled factor in your final result and your safety. This is the protocol
DermaVue dermatologists give every SmoothX patient, written out in detail, with
specific guidance for Kerala’s humid climate and South Indian skin.
What is the correct aftercare after a laser hair reduction session?
Correct aftercare after a laser hair reduction session centres on photoprotection, friction avoidance, and a
48-hour pause on actives. Following four-wavelength diode laser treatment (FDA K191321 cleared) by a
board-certified dermatologist, treated skin should be cleansed with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser,
moisturised with a ceramide-based emollient, and protected with broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen reapplied
every two hours during daytime exposure. Hot showers, sauna, swimming pools, gym sessions, and active scrubs
are avoided for 48 hours. Retinoids, alpha-hydroxy acids, and bleaching agents are paused for 7 days.
Threading, waxing, and epilation are not permitted between sessions on Fitzpatrick III–VI skin; shaving is
the only mechanical hair removal allowed. Indian Dermatology Society 2026 consensus on post-laser
photoprotection emphasises 4-week strict SPF discipline, since 85–90% of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
cases trace to inadequate photoprotection within the first month.

Hour 0–24 · Immediate post-treatment
The first 24 hours, when discipline matters most
The first day after any SmoothX session is when your follicles are processing the
thermal signal and your epidermis is at its most vulnerable to secondary insult.
Discipline in this window is what keeps complication rates where they should be.
Do
Apply the cooling gel we provide every 4–6 hours for the first 24 hours. It is purpose-formulated for post-laser skin and replaces every other product on the treated area.
Wear SPF 50+ before leaving the clinic if any treated area will see daylight. We have it at every reception desk.
Loose, breathable cotton clothing over treated body areas. Synthetic fabric trapping sweat against fresh skin is a PIH trigger.
Sleep on clean cotton pillowcases after facial sessions, bacterial transfer from a worn pillowcase can cause folliculitis.
Drink water and rest. Your skin heals faster well-hydrated.
Do not
No hot showers, hot baths, sauna, steam, or hot tubs for 24 hours. Lukewarm water only.
No swimming pools (chlorine) or seawater for 48 hours.
No vigorous exercise for 24 hours. Sweat against treated skin is irritating.
No sun exposure on treated areas. Even brief unprotected exposure can trigger PIH on Fitzpatrick V–VI skin.
No fragranced products, scrubs, or exfoliants on the treated area.
No makeup on the face for 12 hours after a facial session, ideally 24.
No alcohol for 24 hours, vasodilation worsens redness and prolongs swelling.
The mild redness, warmth, and small bumps around treated follicles described in our
side-effects guide are normal in this window.
Anything beyond, sharp pain, blistering, white or grey skin discolouration —
is not normal. WhatsApp us immediately.
Week 1–2 · Recovery and shedding
The two weeks after each session, sun, skincare, and the shedding phase
From day 2 onwards your skin returns to baseline tolerance and you can resume most
of normal life, with three lasting disciplines for the full 14-day window.
SPF 50+ for two weeks
This is the single most important post-laser instruction we give Kerala patients. Treated
skin is briefly more vulnerable to UV-driven melanocyte activation, which is the
biological pathway to PIH. SPF 50+ broad-spectrum, applied to any sun-exposed treated
area before leaving home and reapplied every 3–4 hours if you are outdoors. We
recommend tinted mineral SPF for facial areas, tinted blocks visible-light wavelengths
in addition to UV, which matters for Fitzpatrick V–VI patients with melasma history.
Skincare reintroduction schedule
Day 2: Resume gentle non-fragranced moisturiser. Mild cleanser only.
Day 3: Reintroduce non-perfumed deodorant (after underarm session). Antiperspirants with aluminium salts from day 4.
Day 7: Pause on retinoids, AHA/BHA acids, vitamin C serums lifts. Stop avoiding these only from day 8.
Day 8 onwards: Resume your usual active skincare. If your skin still feels sensitive, extend to day 10–12.
The shedding phase (day 4–14)
From around day 4 to day 14, the laser-destroyed hairs fall out of their follicles.
Many patients see this as a temporary apparent increase in hair as previously
dormant hairs surface and shed alongside the freshly destroyed ones. This is the
desired outcome, it confirms the laser worked. Gentle exfoliation in the shower with
a soft washcloth (not a scrub) helps the shedding without disturbing the follicle.
Do not pluck, wax, or epilate during shedding under any circumstance, those methods
remove the follicle and break the laser sequence.
Self-tanner: 14 days minimum, longer if active redness persists.
Threading or waxing on treated areas: indefinitely (use shaving instead).
Between sessions
What is normal between sessions, and what is not
The interval between sessions (4–8 weeks depending on body area) is when your hair
cycle catches the next batch of follicles in their active growth phase. The pattern
most patients experience:
Week 1–2 after session: Shedding phase. Apparent stable or slightly increased hair density as previously dormant hairs surface.
Week 3–4: Smoother window. Treated hairs have fully shed. Some new hairs from the next anagen cycle begin to appear, finer than baseline.
Week 5–6: Visible reduction compared to pre-treatment baseline becomes obvious. Patients often comment they can “see” the result at this point.
Week 7–8: Time for the next session. Shave 24 hours before, the follicle should be visible at the skin surface but the shaft should not.
Shaving is the only acceptable hair removal method between laser sessions,
because it leaves the follicle intact for the next treatment to target. Waxing,
threading, epilating, and depilatory cream all remove the follicle and reset the laser
sequence, patients who do this between sessions extend their course unnecessarily.
WhatsApp us at any point between sessions if you notice persistent
redness beyond a few days, any bump that does not resolve, increased hair growth at
the periphery of a treated area (the paradoxical-hypertrichosis sign described in our
side-effects guide), or any change in
pigmentation. Early review prevents small issues becoming protocol problems.
Preparation for next session
Pre-treatment checklist for each subsequent session
14 days clear of unprotected sun exposure on the treatment area. Apply SPF 50+ if any sun is unavoidable. We will reschedule rather than treat tanned skin.
4 weeks since any waxing, threading, or epilation in the treatment field. Shaving is fine and required.
24 hours since shaving. The follicle should be flush with the skin surface, visible at the opening but no shaft above.
7 days off topical retinoids, hydroquinone, AHA/BHA acids on the treatment area.
Disclose any new medications or supplements at the consultation desk before starting. Photosensitising medications matter.
Arrive with no makeup, lotion, oil, perfume, or deodorant on the treatment area. Plain skin only.
Eat before the appointment. Patients occasionally feel light-headed from the warmth on larger areas, a meal helps.
Kerala climate · Specific guidance
Sun, humidity, and monsoon, aftercare for South Indian conditions
Kerala’s climate creates two challenges that generic international aftercare guides do
not address: year-round high UV index and seasonal humidity-driven folliculitis. Both
are manageable with adjusted aftercare.
UV exposure
Kerala’s UV index runs above 8 for most of the year, comparable to peak summer in
higher latitudes. SPF 50+ is not a recommendation in our protocol, it is a requirement
for the two weeks following each session. Patients who travel for outdoor work
(Technopark commute, fieldwork, beach weddings) should plan their session timing
around it. Re-apply SPF every 3–4 hours when outdoors, and physical sun protection
(hat, scarf, long sleeves) is the most reliable backup. Tinted mineral SPF blocks
visible light in addition to UV, which matters for Fitzpatrick V–VI patients with any
melasma history.
Monsoon humidity and folliculitis
Kerala’s monsoon months (June–September) push folliculitis rates higher across the
population. Post-laser skin in this window benefits from extra discipline: keep
treatment areas dry, change out of damp clothing promptly, avoid heavy occlusive
creams that trap moisture against the skin. If you develop pustules in a treated area
WhatsApp us, we can prescribe a short topical antibacterial course rather than have
the issue progress.
Outdoor activity and sweat
Sweat against freshly treated skin irritates the follicles and increases PIH risk in
Fitzpatrick V–VI patients. Avoid intense outdoor activity for 48 hours after each
session, particularly in summer months. Light walking the same day is fine. Resume
your full routine after 48 hours.

“Every SmoothX session is performed end-to-end by a dermatologist. I am the one calibrating your parameters, holding the handpiece, managing any redness or follicle reaction at 48 hours. That is the difference between a medical procedure and a salon service, and it is non-negotiable at our clinics.”
SmoothX, patient questions
Patient questions about post-treatment care
All answers reviewed by Dr. Minu Liz Mathew MD DVL.
Can I have laser if I have a sun tan?
No. Active tan increases epidermal melanin density, which raises the risk of burns and PIH at any laser fluence. We require at least 14 days clear of unprotected sun exposure before any session and we will reschedule rather than treat tanned patients. This applies to natural tan and to artificial tanning lotions equally.
Can I have laser if I am on isotretinoin (Accutane) or retinoids?
Oral isotretinoin requires a 6-month washout before laser hair removal, the medication makes skin more fragile and increases scarring risk. Topical retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene) require a 7-day pause. Topical hydroquinone and acid-based exfoliants likewise require a short pause. Always disclose every medication and active topical at consultation.
Does Kerala’s humidity affect laser results?
Humidity itself does not affect laser efficacy, but two related factors do. First, monsoon-season folliculitis is more common in Kerala, we treat this dermatologically before commencing laser. Second, post-session sweating and friction increase PIH risk, so we ask patients to avoid intense outdoor activity for 48 hours after each session and reinforce SPF 50+ for two weeks.
How should I prepare for a laser session?
Shave the treatment area 24 hours before, the follicle should be visible at the skin surface but the shaft should not. Avoid waxing, threading, or epilation for 4 weeks before your first session. Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 2 weeks. Stop topical retinoids for 7 days. Arrive with no makeup, lotion, or deodorant on the treatment area.
What should I do after a laser session?
Apply the cooling gel we provide for 24 hours. Use SPF 50+ on the treated area for 2 weeks. Avoid hot baths, saunas, swimming, intense exercise, and sun exposure for 24–48 hours. No retinoids or acid exfoliants on the treated area for 7 days. Mild redness or follicular swelling is normal for 24 hours.
Can I shave between sessions?
Yes, shaving is the only acceptable hair removal method between laser sessions because it leaves the follicle intact for the next treatment. Do NOT wax, thread, epilate, or use depilatory cream, these remove the follicle and break the laser sequence. Shave 24 hours before your next session for best results.
When can I exercise after a session?
Wait 24 hours before vigorous exercise, swimming, or sauna use. Sweat against freshly treated skin can irritate the follicles and increase PIH risk in dark Fitzpatrick patients. Light walking the same day is fine. Resume your full routine after 48 hours.
Can I wear makeup after a face laser session?
Wait at least 12 hours before applying makeup, and ideally skip it for 24 hours. Use a clean brush or sponge, bacterial introduction to freshly treated skin can cause folliculitis. Apply tinted SPF 50+ as your first product the next day rather than untinted moisturiser plus separate sunscreen, fewer products on the treated area is better.
What is the "shedding phase" after laser?
In the 7–14 days following each session, the laser-destroyed hairs fall out of their follicles. Many patients see this as a temporary increase in hair as previously dormant hairs surface and shed. This is the desired outcome, it confirms the laser worked. Do not pluck or wax during shedding; gentle exfoliation in the shower is fine.
Can I use deodorant after an underarm laser session?
Wait 24 hours. Then use a non-perfumed, alcohol-free deodorant for 48 hours. Antiperspirants with aluminium salts can be reintroduced from day 3. If the underarm feels sensitive, switch to a sensitive-skin formula for the duration of the course.
What if I miss a session by a few weeks?
A delay of 2–4 weeks is not a problem, we adjust the next session timing to your next anagen window. A delay beyond 12 weeks may mean some follicles re-cycle and the course requires an additional session to maintain the reduction trajectory. Re-book as soon as possible and the dermatologist will assess at the next visit.
What should I do if I get a burn or blister after laser?
Contact us immediately on WhatsApp, your supervising dermatologist will review same-day. In the meantime, cool the area with a clean cloth wrapped around ice, do not apply ice directly, do not pop blisters, do not use over-the-counter ointments without dermatologist guidance. The dermatologist will prescribe appropriate care and assess whether protocol adjustment is needed for subsequent sessions.
