Semaglutide for Obesity Verified October 2026

Wegovy in India: Price, Weight Loss Results and MASH Approval

Wegovy is the semaglutide pen that India has actually approved for obesity, and since July 2026 for fatty liver disease too. Here is the real India price dose by dose, how it compares to Ozempic and generic semaglutide, and who it suits, written to answer the question a patient is really asking.

Also searched as Wegovy injection, Wygobi, Wagobi, Wegony, Wigobi, Weg Ovy, Wygova.

Bottom Line

Wegovy (Novo Nordisk) starts at about ₹5,660 per month for the 0.25 mg starter pen after the April 2026 cut, rising to about ₹16,400 per month at the 2.4 mg maintenance dose. It is the only semaglutide in India approved for obesity, and since July 2026 the only GLP-1 approved for fatty liver (MASH). It is the same molecule as Ozempic and as generic semaglutide, which starts at ₹325 per week. Verified October 2026.

Why Wegovy is a distinct entity

Same molecule as Ozempic, a different job on paper

Semaglutide is sold in India under three names. The molecule is identical; the approvals and doses are not.

The obesity indication

Approved for weight, not borrowed from diabetes

Ozempic carries a type 2 diabetes label in India, so prescribing it for weight loss is off-label. Wegovy is the semaglutide product CDSCO approved for the obesity indication itself, titrated to the higher 2.4 mg weekly dose used in the obesity trials.

The MASH approval, July 2026

The first GLP-1 approved for the liver in India

Since July 2026 Wegovy also carries a CDSCO approval for MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis) with F2 to F3 fibrosis. That makes it the first GLP-1 medicine in India approved for a liver indication, not just a weight one. It is a physician decision based on liver staging.

Wegovy price in India, verified October 2026

Wegovy price, dose by dose

Generic semaglutide from ₹325/week. Ozempic (Novo Nordisk) from ₹1,415/week. Mounjaro (Eli Lilly) from ₹3,281/week. Wegovy itself starts at From ₹5,660/month and rises with each dose step.

Wegovy pre-filled pen (4 weekly doses per pen, per month). October 2026 (after the April 2026 Novo Nordisk cut of about 48%). Source: PharmEasy and public India MRP listings.
Dose Titration phase MRP (per month)
Wegovy 0.25 mg Starter (weeks 1-4) ₹5,660/month
Wegovy 0.5 mg Titration (weeks 5-8) ₹8,100/month
Wegovy 1 mg Titration (weeks 9-12) ₹9,100/month
Wegovy 1.7 mg Titration (weeks 13-16) ₹12,750/month
Wegovy 2.4 mg Maintenance (week 17 onward) ₹16,400/month

Wegovy titrates across five fixed dose steps to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose. MRP is the ceiling and a pharmacy may sell below it. We re-verify these figures on the first of each month. If cost is the main constraint, generic semaglutide is the identical molecule from ₹325 per week: see generic semaglutide brands and price. For branded semaglutide at the diabetes dose, see Ozempic price in India. The SuperHuman consultation fee is separate and is not shown on this page.

Wegovy, Ozempic and generic semaglutide

Three names for one molecule

Wegovy vs Ozempic

Same molecule, semaglutide, same maker, Novo Nordisk. Ozempic is diabetes-labelled and tops out at 2.0 mg weekly; Wegovy is obesity-labelled, goes to 2.4 mg, and adds the MASH approval. For weight loss specifically, Wegovy is the on-label version. See the full Ozempic price in India guide.

Wegovy vs generic semaglutide

Identical active molecule. After the March 2026 patent expiry, Indian generics deliver semaglutide from ₹325 per week, roughly a quarter of the branded pen. The branded premium buys the pen format and the obesity indication. See generic semaglutide brands and price.

Wegovy vs Mounjaro

Different molecules. Mounjaro is tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist that led the only head-to-head trial, SURMOUNT-5, on average weight loss. Wegovy leads on proven organ outcomes (heart, kidney, liver). Compare Mounjaro, Ozempic and Wegovy side by side.

What Wegovy has actually shown

The evidence, by trial

Weight loss

STEP 1 (New England Journal of Medicine, 2021): semaglutide 2.4 mg produced a 14.9 percent mean weight loss at 68 weeks versus 2.4 percent on placebo, in a largely non-Indian cohort. This is the trial behind the obesity approval.

Heart outcomes

SELECT (NEJM 2023), 17,604 adults with cardiovascular disease and without diabetes: semaglutide 2.4 mg cut major cardiovascular events by 20 percent. This organ-outcome evidence is a reason semaglutide is chosen when the heart is a priority.

Fatty liver, MASH

ESSENCE (NEJM 2025): in biopsy-confirmed MASH with F2 to F3 fibrosis, semaglutide 2.4 mg resolved steatohepatitis in 62.9 percent versus 34.3 percent on placebo. This is the basis for the July 2026 CDSCO approval of Wegovy for MASH in India.

What it has not shown

On the one head-to-head weight-loss trial, SURMOUNT-5 (NEJM 2025), tirzepatide (Mounjaro) produced more average weight loss than semaglutide, 20.2 versus 13.7 percent at 72 weeks. Honest framing matters: Wegovy leads on proven organ outcomes, tirzepatide leads on average weight.

What this means for Indian patients

Lower BMI thresholds, and a muscle-loss caution

India uses lower thresholds than the West because South Asians store more visceral and liver fat at any given BMI, the thin-fat phenotype: overweight from a BMI of 23 and obese from 25, not the WHO 25 and 30. Wegovy is generally considered at a BMI of 27.5 with a weight-related condition, or 25 with metabolic risk such as prediabetes, PCOS or fatty liver, and the waist measurement matters as much as the number on the scale.

India's first real-world GLP-1 data, a Max Hospital study of 150 patients in the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, showed a median of 8.2 percent weight loss at about six months, with 73 percent losing at least 5 percent. That is below the 14.9 percent of STEP 1, which reflects shorter real-world follow-up and titration persistence rather than a failure of the drug.

One Indian-specific caution shapes how we prescribe it: rapid semaglutide weight loss on a rice-dominant, often protein-light diet raises the risk of muscle and bone loss. The program pairs the injection with a protein target and resistance training, rather than shipping a pen and leaving the rest to the patient.

Side effects and safety

What to expect, and the hard rules

  • Stomach side effects are the common ones: nausea, early fullness, occasional vomiting, constipation or loose motions, mostly mild to moderate and worst in the first weeks of each dose step. Slow titration and diet changes reduce them.
  • Tolerance: in the SURMOUNT-5 trial, stomach side effects led 5.6 percent of semaglutide users to stop. Most people titrate through them.
  • Muscle loss is part of any rapid weight loss and matters more in the South Asian phenotype. Protein and resistance training are not optional extras.
  • Hard stops: a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN-2, a confirmed episode of pancreatitis, pregnancy or planning pregnancy within about two months, and breastfeeding.
  • If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea for diabetes, those doses usually need reducing to avoid low blood sugar. That is a physician adjustment.

This is why Wegovy is a physician-supervised treatment. The eligibility check screens for the hard stops before anything else.

Frequently Asked Questions

What patients ask about Wegovy in India

How much does Wegovy cost in India?

Wegovy (Novo Nordisk) starts at about ₹5,660 per month for the 0.25 mg starter pen after the April 2026 price cut, rising with each titration step to about ₹16,400 per month at the 2.4 mg maintenance dose. These are MRPs and a pharmacy may sell below them. Generic semaglutide is the identical molecule from ₹325 per week, roughly ₹1,290 per month, if cost is the main constraint.

Is Wegovy approved for obesity in India?

Yes. Wegovy is the semaglutide product that CDSCO has approved specifically for the obesity indication in India. Ozempic, the same molecule, carries a type 2 diabetes approval, so its use for weight loss is off-label. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is also approved for diabetes. Wegovy is the on-label route when an obesity diagnosis and indication matter clinically.

Is Wegovy approved for fatty liver or MASH in India?

Yes, since July 2026. Wegovy is the first GLP-1 medicine approved by CDSCO for MASH (metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis) in India, for patients with F2 to F3 fibrosis. The approval rests on the ESSENCE trial (New England Journal of Medicine, 2025), where semaglutide 2.4 mg resolved steatohepatitis in 62.9 percent of patients versus 34.3 percent on placebo. It is a physician decision based on liver staging, not a self-serve use.

What is the difference between Wegovy and Ozempic?

Both are semaglutide from Novo Nordisk, the same molecule. Ozempic is approved in India for type 2 diabetes and tops out at a 2.0 mg weekly dose. Wegovy is approved for obesity, titrates to a higher 2.4 mg weekly dose, and since July 2026 also carries the MASH liver approval. When Ozempic is used for weight loss it is off-label; Wegovy is the obesity-indicated version of the same drug.

Is generic semaglutide the same as Wegovy?

It is the same active molecule, semaglutide. After the March 2026 patent expiry, more than 40 DCGI-approved generic semaglutide brands entered India from ₹325 per weekly vial dose. Wegovy is the branded, obesity-indicated pen from Novo Nordisk at a higher price. The clinical effect comes from the molecule; the price gap reflects brand, the obesity indication and the pen format. A physician chooses based on cost, injection preference and indication.

Who can take Wegovy in India?

Indian eligibility uses lower BMI thresholds than the West because of the South Asian thin-fat phenotype: overweight from a BMI of 23 and obese from 25, not the WHO 25 and 30. Wegovy is generally considered for a BMI of 27.5 with a weight-related condition, or 25 with metabolic risk such as prediabetes, PCOS or fatty liver, and the waist measurement matters as much as BMI. Thyroid cancer history, pancreatitis and pregnancy are contraindications. A physician confirms candidacy.

What are the side effects of Wegovy?

The common ones are stomach side effects: nausea, early fullness, occasional vomiting, constipation or loose motions, mostly mild to moderate and worst in the first weeks of each dose step. In the SURMOUNT-5 trial, stomach side effects led 5.6 percent of semaglutide users to stop. Muscle loss is part of any rapid weight loss and matters more in the South Asian phenotype, so a protein target and resistance training are part of the program, not optional extras.

How do I start Wegovy in India?

Start with a clinical eligibility check that uses Indian BMI thresholds and screens for the hard contraindications, then a physician reviews the result. Wegovy begins at 0.25 mg weekly for four weeks and steps up through 0.5, 1.0 and 1.7 mg to the 2.4 mg maintenance dose as tolerance allows. DermaVue prescribes after evaluation; medication is bought from licensed pharmacies with verified cold chain.

Not sure if Wegovy is right for you

Start with a two-minute eligibility check.

The screen uses Indian BMI thresholds, flags the hard contraindications, and a physician reviews the result before any medication is suggested. No drug is right for everyone.
