Chemical Peels in Thrissur: Acid Matched to Your Skin
A chemical peel is not one product but a graded ladder of acids, and the skill is matching the right acid, strength and depth to your skin. At nearly 10.5 degrees north, Thrissur skin carries years of accumulated sun exposure that dulls and roughens the surface, while Fitzpatrick IV-V skin can answer an over-aggressive peel with the very pigmentation it came to fix. DermaVue Punkunnam selects each peel to resurface dullness, marks and scars without that rebound. Consultation Rs.300.

Chemical Peels at DermaVue Thrissur
A chemical peel applies a controlled acid to the skin so the damaged outer layers shed in a planned way and fresh skin regenerates beneath, with smoother texture, fewer marks and a more even tone. The acid is not the point; the depth is. Superficial peels lift the dead, dull surface layer; medium-depth peels reach into the upper dermis for scars and stubborn pigment. The IADVL Standard Guidelines of Care for Chemical Peels, published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, classify superficial peels as safe in Indian skin, advise medium-depth peels only with great caution in darker skin, and do not recommend deep phenol peels for Fitzpatrick IV to VI at all, because the risk of prolonged or permanent pigment change is real.
Two local facts shape every peel we choose. The clinic sits at about 10.5 degrees north, close enough to the equator that the sun runs near-overhead through most of the year with little seasonal let-up, so skin here accumulates a quiet, decade-long dose of ultraviolet that thickens and dulls the surface and scatters uneven epidermal pigment. That accumulated photodamage, not a single summer tan, is what a peel resurfaces. The second fact is biological: melanin-rich Fitzpatrick IV and V skin, the norm across central Kerala, carries reactive melanocytes that respond to an over-deep or over-frequent peel by flooding the area with pigment, leaving it darker than before. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the single most common complication we correct after non-specialist peels. It is also entirely avoidable, which is why the choice of acid matters less than the discipline of depth, spacing and aftercare.
This is why peel selection at DermaVue is diagnosis-led rather than a fixed menu. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it slips into sebum-blocked pores and suits oily, acne-prone skin. Mandelic acid has the largest molecule of the common acids, so it penetrates slowest and most evenly, which makes it the safest brightening choice for darker skin and post-inflammatory marks. Glycolic acid works faster on dullness and texture but needs a careful hand. Dr. Shilpa Mary Shaji (MBBS, DVD, DNB) and Dr. Celia Hamlet (MD) match the acid, the concentration and the number of sessions to your skin, and for pigment-prone patients the course begins with two to four weeks of priming, a tretinoin and depigmenting preparation that the IADVL guidelines specify and that no salon peel includes. For melasma and broader pigmentation correction, peels are one part of a plan a dermatologist designs, not a standalone fix.
The IADVL Standard Guidelines of Care for Chemical Peels classify superficial peels as safe in Indian skin and advise against deep peels in Fitzpatrick IV to VI because of the pigment risk (IJDVL). In a 44-patient Indian comparative trial, a salicylic-mandelic peel produced significantly less post-peel hyperpigmentation than a glycolic peel over six fortnightly sessions, with better pigment outcomes at twelve weeks (Garg, Sinha, Sarkar, Dermatologic Surgery, 2009), the evidence behind our preference for mandelic chemistry in darker skin.
