Expert Comparison

GFC vs PRP
for Hair Loss

Growth Factor Concentrate vs Platelet Rich Plasma — a head-to-head comparison by DermaVue dermatologists. Both treatments use your own blood to stimulate hair regrowth, but they differ significantly in concentration, sessions, and results.

Understanding the Difference

How GFC and PRP Work

How PRP Works

PRP therapy begins with drawing 20–40 ml of your blood, which is then placed in a centrifuge and spun at high speed. This separates the blood into three layers: platelet-poor plasma (top), platelet-rich plasma (middle), and red blood cells (bottom). The platelet-rich layer is extracted and injected into the scalp.

Platelets contain growth factors — PDGF (Platelet Derived Growth Factor), VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor), EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), and TGF-β (Transforming Growth Factor). These stimulate follicle stem cells, increase blood supply, and promote the transition from resting (telogen) to growth (anagen) phase.

PRP has been used for hair loss since the mid-2000s and has extensive clinical evidence supporting its efficacy. It remains the gold-standard platelet-based therapy worldwide.

How GFC Works

GFC takes the concept of PRP further. Instead of simply concentrating platelets, GFC uses a specialised preparation kit that activates platelets to release their growth factors, then separates the pure growth factors from all cellular components (platelets, red blood cells, white blood cells).

The result is a cell-free solution containing 5x higher concentration of PDGF, VEGF, EGF, and IGF-1 compared to standard PRP. Because no cells are present, there is significantly less inflammation, less pain during injection, and faster recovery. The concentrated growth factors provide more potent stimulation to follicles in fewer sessions.

GFC technology was developed in 2019–2020 and has rapidly gained adoption in dermatology clinics across India. DermaVue was among the early adopters, and our dermatologists have extensive experience with both GFC and PRP protocols.

Key Scientific Difference

The fundamental difference is purity and concentration. PRP delivers growth factors along with platelets, red blood cells, and white blood cells. The cellular components trigger an inflammatory response — which partly contributes to healing but also causes pain, swelling, and discomfort.

GFC delivers only growth factors — no cells whatsoever. This eliminates the inflammatory response while delivering a significantly higher dose of the active ingredients that stimulate hair growth. It is the difference between taking a whole fruit (with skin, pulp, and seeds) versus taking a concentrated extract of just the active nutrients.

Expert Recommendation

Which Should You Choose?

Choose GFC If You

Want Maximum Results

  • Have moderate to advanced hair thinning
  • Want faster visible results (2–3 months)
  • Prefer fewer sessions (3–4 vs 4–6)
  • Are sensitive to pain or discomfort
  • Have not responded well to standard PRP
  • Want the latest evidence-based technology
Choose PRP If You

Want Proven & Affordable

  • Have early-stage hair thinning
  • Prefer a treatment with decades of evidence
  • Have a tighter budget per session
  • Have previously responded well to PRP
  • Want a well-established maintenance protocol
  • Are combining with hair transplant (included free)

DermaVue's recommendation: Both GFC and PRP are effective, evidence-based treatments for hair loss. For patients seeking the most potent growth factor delivery with minimal sessions and discomfort, GFC is the superior choice. For patients with early-stage thinning who respond well to established protocols, PRP remains an excellent and more affordable option.

Importantly, your DermaVue dermatologist will assess your specific type of hair loss, stage, and treatment history before recommending one over the other. In some cases, a combined approach — starting with GFC for the initial course, then switching to PRP for maintenance — provides the optimal balance of efficacy and cost.

Common Questions

GFC vs PRP FAQ

The key difference is concentration and purity. PRP concentrates all blood components including platelets, red and white blood cells. GFC extracts and concentrates only the pure growth factors (PDGF, VEGF, EGF, IGF-1) while eliminating cellular components. This results in 5x higher growth factor concentration in GFC compared to standard PRP, with less pain and inflammation.

GFC is generally considered more effective due to its 5x higher growth factor concentration. Clinical studies show GFC produces faster visible results (2–3 months vs 3–4 for PRP), requires fewer sessions (3–4 vs 4–6), and causes less post-treatment discomfort. However, PRP remains well-established with decades of evidence. Both are available at DermaVue — your dermatologist recommends based on your specific situation.

At DermaVue, PRP costs ₹3,000–₹5,000 per session, GFC costs ₹5,000–₹8,000 per session. However, GFC requires fewer sessions (3–4 vs 4–6 for PRP), making total course costs comparable: PRP course ₹18,000–₹30,000 vs GFC course ₹20,000–₹32,000. Both are eligible for 0% EMI financing.

GFC is significantly less painful because it eliminates red and white blood cells — the primary triggers of inflammation and pain. PRP contains these cellular components, which can cause temporary swelling, redness, and soreness. Both treatments at DermaVue use fine-gauge needles and optional numbing cream for comfort.

GFC typically requires 3–4 initial sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart, with maintenance every 4–6 months. PRP typically requires 4–6 initial sessions at the same interval, with maintenance every 3–4 months. GFC needs fewer sessions due to its higher growth factor concentration.

Yes, both are frequently combined with FUE hair transplant at DermaVue. A session is often performed on transplant day to boost graft survival. Post-transplant maintenance every 3–6 months helps nourish both transplanted and native hair. DermaVue includes one complimentary PRP session with every hair transplant.

GFC is recommended for patients with moderate to advanced thinning needing maximum stimulation, those sensitive to pain, patients preferring fewer sessions, those who haven't responded well to standard PRP, or anyone wanting faster visible results. PRP is better for early-stage loss, tighter budgets, or patients already responding well to PRP.

Neither provides permanent results alone — both require ongoing maintenance sessions. The growth factors stimulate follicle activity, but the underlying genetic DHT sensitivity persists. Without maintenance, hair gradually returns to pre-treatment state. DermaVue recommends maintenance every 3–6 months. For permanent restoration in areas of complete follicle loss, FUE hair transplant is recommended alongside PRP/GFC maintenance.
