    In her own words

I studied medicine in this city. My MBBS is from Coimbatore Medical College, and I went to Chennai for my MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy at SRIHER. Before joining DermaVue I taught as an Assistant Professor at KMCH Institute of Health Sciences and Research. I now consult full time at DermaVue in Gandhipuram, in English and Tamil.

Teaching changed how I practise. When you have to explain a rash to a postgraduate, you stop reaching for the quick label and start looking again at what is actually on the skin. That habit is most useful in two situations. The first is children, where the parent is worried, the child will not sit still, and the diagnosis often rests on the distribution rather than the lesion itself. The second is the rash that is a signal from somewhere else in the body.

My paper in the Indian Journal of Paediatric Dermatology in 2024 was about precisely that. A child's acanthosis nigricans turned out to be the clue to Rabson–Mendenhall syndrome. Bullous lupus and cutaneous metastases sit in the same category, and I have presented on them. I am a member of the IADVL, registration PLM/TN/14255.

    Questions patients ask

Where did you train in dermatology?

My MBBS is from Coimbatore Medical College, 2012 to 2018. I did my MD in Dermatology, Venereology and Leprosy at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research in Chennai, from 2020 to 2023. I am registered with the Tamil Nadu Medical Council under number 132758.

    Do you see children?

Yes. Paediatric dermatology is one of my documented areas of interest, and my published paper is in the Indian Journal of Paediatric Dermatology, 2024. Children are not small adults on the skin. Distribution, age of onset and the parent's account of the first lesion usually matter more than the rash in front of me.

My neck and underarms have gone dark and velvety. What is that?

That description fits acanthosis nigricans. It is a skin change, but it is often the first visible sign of insulin resistance, so I usually ask about weight, family history of diabetes and, in young women, menstrual pattern. I will often ask for blood tests before discussing anything cosmetic.

What is lichen planus, and why is it taking so long to settle?

Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition in which the body's own immune cells attack the skin, and sometimes the mouth, nails or scalp. It tends to run a course over months rather than weeks. The darkening left behind after the itchy phase settles also fades slowly, and I explain that timeline at the first visit.

You taught dermatology before this. Does that show up in how you consult?

I held an Assistant Professor post at KMCH Institute of Health Sciences and Research before I came to DermaVue, where I now work full time. Teaching a postgraduate means justifying a diagnosis out loud to someone entitled to argue back. I consult the same way, so I will usually tell you what else the rash could have been and why I ruled it out.

Which languages do you consult in?

English and Tamil. Tell the front desk which you prefer when you book. A parent describing a child's rash gives me better information in the language they think in, and with children that history is often what settles the diagnosis rather than the examination.
