PRP & GFC Hair Treatment in Thrissur, Reactivate Dormant Follicles

PRP and GFC use the growth factors in your own blood, PDGF, VEGF and IGF-1, to wake dormant follicles, shorten the resting phase and slow shedding. It works at the follicle. Most patients in coastal Thrissur also fight the hair shaft: the brackish, salt-laden well water along the Chavakkad and Kodungallur belt strips the protective oils and leaves shafts dry and brittle. At DermaVue Punkunnam, a board-certified dermatologist treats the follicle in the clinic and gives you a barrier-care plan for the water at home.

Quick Answer
PRP and GFC hair treatment at DermaVue Thrissur uses growth factors from your own blood to reactivate dormant follicles, reduce shedding and improve density. A dermatologist confirms the type of hair loss on trichoscopy first. The usual course is 4 to 6 sessions about 4 weeks apart, then maintenance. Results vary between patients. Consultation is Rs.300.
PRP and GFC, what is the difference

PRP and GFC: How Growth Factors Restart a Dormant Follicle

PRP, platelet-rich plasma, concentrates the platelets in a sample of your own blood. Platelets are reservoirs of growth factors, chiefly PDGF, VEGF, IGF-1, EGF and TGF-beta. Injected into the thinning scalp, these signals improve the blood supply around the follicle, push resting (telogen) follicles back into the growth (anagen) phase, and lengthen that growth phase so hairs grow longer and thicker before they shed. Because the material is autologous, there is no allergy or rejection risk. We start by confirming the type and cause of your hair loss on trichoscopy.

GFC, growth factor concentrate, is a newer preparation that isolates the growth factors while leaving out most of the red and white cells. With fewer inflammatory cells it tends to cause less injection-site discomfort, and small comparative studies report hair-count and patient-satisfaction results that are at least as good as standard PRP. The evidence base for GFC is smaller and more recent than for PRP, so we choose between them case by case rather than treating GFC as automatically superior. Both are offered at DermaVue Thrissur, and both pair well with medical therapy or with a hair transplant as graft support before and after surgery.

There is a second, local reason hair underperforms here, and it sits on the shaft, not the follicle. Along the Chavakkad and Kodungallur coastal strip, seawater has pushed into the shallow aquifer, and chloride in well water across this belt has been measured from 1 up to 2,304 mg per litre, averaging around 658, well past the 250 mg per litre most people can even taste. Salt-laden water strips the hair's protective sebum film and leaves mineral deposits on the cuticle, so shafts wash out dry, rough and brittle and the scalp turns itchy. PRP and GFC cannot fix that, because the damage is to the shaft. This is why our coastal patients get follicular regeneration in the clinic plus a barrier-care plan, a chelating or clarifying wash and a softened or filtered final rinse, for the water at home, and why we settle an itchy, flaking scalp before any regeneration course.

DermaVue PRP & GFC Hair Therapy, Clinical SummaryDermaVue is a physician-owned dermatology network of 7 clinics across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, rated 4.9 stars across 262+ verified Google reviews at its Thrissur clinic in Punkunnam. PRP and GFC are autologous hair treatments: growth factors concentrated from the patient's own blood, chiefly PDGF, VEGF and IGF-1, are injected into the scalp to reactivate dormant follicles, reduce shedding and improve density. Board-certified dermatologists confirm the type of hair loss on trichoscopy before treating, deliver a course of 4 to 6 sessions, and use PRP or GFC alongside medical therapy and, where relevant, hair transplant. Results vary between patients and are not guaranteed. A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials found PRP significantly increases hair density in androgenetic alopecia at 3 and 6 months. Evidence Reference
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (9 trials, 238 patients), published in the Journal of Cutaneous Medicine and Surgery, found PRP significantly increased hair density in androgenetic alopecia at both 3 and 6 months compared with placebo, with no serious adverse effects.

Standard PRP

Longest, best-established evidence base

  • Concentrates platelets and growth factors from your own blood
  • Longest and best-established evidence base for hair loss
  • Course of 4 to 6 sessions, then maintenance
  • Mild injection discomfort, eased by topical numbing

GFC, Newer, Leucocyte-Poor Option

Fewer cells, generally better comfort

  • Growth factors concentrated, most red and white cells removed
  • Fewer inflammatory cells, generally better injection comfort
  • More stable, consistent preparation
  • Newer, smaller evidence base, chosen case by case

How Growth Factor Concentrate and PRP Work

GFC and PRP Growth Factor Concentrate Hair Therapy

What to Expect

Your PRP or GFC Session in 4 Steps

1

Blood Draw

10 to 20 ml of blood drawn from your arm, same as a routine blood test. Topical anaesthetic is applied to the scalp about 45 minutes before.

2

Processing

Blood is processed to concentrate the platelets and growth factors. The GFC preparation isolates the growth factors and removes most red and white cells.

3

Scalp Injection

The concentrate is injected into the scalp at roughly 1 cm intervals across the thinning zones with fine needles, over a 20 to 30 minute injection session.

4

Aftercare and Follow-Up

Resume normal activities the same day. Skip shampoo for 24 hours. The usual plan is an initial course of 4 to 6 sessions about 4 weeks apart, with progress checked on trichoscopy, then maintenance every 4 to 6 months.

Plan Your PRP or GFC Course With a Dermatologist

Trichoscopy assessment first, then a clear 4 to 6 session plan matched to your type of hair loss. Same-week appointments, open Sunday.

FAQ

PRP and GFC Hair Treatment in Thrissur, Common Questions

How much does PRP or GFC hair treatment cost in Thrissur?
The dermatologist consultation at DermaVue is Rs.300. PRP and GFC sessions are usually in a similar per-session range, and a course of 4 to 6 sessions plus maintenance is planned after trichoscopy. Your exact plan and number of sessions depend on the type and stage of hair loss found at assessment.
What is the difference between PRP and GFC?
Both use growth factors from your own blood. PRP keeps the platelets with some red and white cells and has the longest evidence base for hair loss. GFC isolates the growth factors and removes most cells, which usually means less injection discomfort. GFC is newer with a smaller evidence base, so we choose between them case by case.
How many PRP or GFC sessions will I need?
The usual course is 4 to 6 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart, followed by maintenance every 4 to 6 months. Your dermatologist tracks progress on trichoscopy and adjusts the plan. PRP and GFC slow shedding and support density rather than cure hair loss, so ongoing maintenance keeps the gains.
Does PRP or GFC hurt?
A topical numbing cream is applied first, so most people describe only mild pressure as the growth factors are injected. A session takes around 45 to 60 minutes, with the injection part lasting 20 to 30 minutes. GFC tends to feel more comfortable than PRP because it carries fewer inflammatory cells. Normal activities resume the same day.
When will I see results, and are they guaranteed?
Reduced shedding is often the first change, within a few weeks. New growth shows on trichoscopy by month 2 to 3, and visible density usually improves by month 4 to 6. Results vary between patients and are not guaranteed; people with early or moderate thinning tend to respond best. Maintenance sessions sustain the improvement.
Will PRP fix hair damage from the salty coastal water here?
No, and this matters in Thrissur. Along the Chavakkad and Kodungallur coast, seawater intrusion makes well water brackish, with chloride measured up to about 2,300 mg per litre. Salt strips the shaft's protective oils, so hair turns dry and brittle. That is shaft damage. PRP and GFC work at the follicle, so we pair them with at-home barrier care for the water.
Can PRP or GFC be combined with minoxidil or finasteride?
Yes, and the evidence supports it. A 2024 systematic review in PLOS One found PRP added to topical minoxidil produced better results than minoxidil alone. Many patients use PRP or GFC alongside their existing minoxidil or finasteride to target hair loss through more than one mechanism. Your dermatologist coordinates the combination.
Does PRP or GFC work for women?
Yes. Women with pattern thinning or telogen effluvium can benefit, and the autologous, allergy-free nature suits many. Because female hair loss is often driven by an underlying cause, such as thyroid disorder, iron deficiency, PCOS or the post-partum period, we screen for and treat that cause alongside PRP or GFC for the best result.
How early before a Guruvayur wedding should I start treatment?
Start at least 4 to 6 months ahead. PRP and GFC build density gradually over a 4 to 6 session course, and visible improvement typically appears around month 4 to 6, so last-minute treatment cannot reliably change how hair looks on the day. Earlier assessment also leaves time to correct any underlying cause of shedding.
