Chemical Peels in Thrissur: Acid Matched to Your Skin

A chemical peel is not one product but a graded ladder of acids, and the skill is matching the right acid, strength and depth to your skin. At nearly 10.5 degrees north, Thrissur skin carries years of accumulated sun exposure that dulls and roughens the surface, while Fitzpatrick IV-V skin can answer an over-aggressive peel with the very pigmentation it came to fix. DermaVue Punkunnam selects each peel to resurface dullness, marks and scars without that rebound. Consultation Rs.300.

Quick answerChemical peels at DermaVue Thrissur use a graded ladder of acids: salicylic for oily, acne-prone skin, mandelic and glycolic for dullness and marks, and TCA for deeper scars, matched by a dermatologist to your Fitzpatrick IV-V skin. Conservative depth, two to four weeks of priming and strict photoprotection keep darker skin from rebound pigmentation. Rs.300 consultation.

About Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels at DermaVue Thrissur

A chemical peel applies a controlled acid to the skin so the damaged outer layers shed in a planned way and fresh skin regenerates beneath, with smoother texture, fewer marks and a more even tone. The acid is not the point; the depth is. Superficial peels lift the dead, dull surface layer; medium-depth peels reach into the upper dermis for scars and stubborn pigment. The IADVL Standard Guidelines of Care for Chemical Peels, published in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, classify superficial peels as safe in Indian skin, advise medium-depth peels only with great caution in darker skin, and do not recommend deep phenol peels for Fitzpatrick IV to VI at all, because the risk of prolonged or permanent pigment change is real.

Two local facts shape every peel we choose. The clinic sits at about 10.5 degrees north, close enough to the equator that the sun runs near-overhead through most of the year with little seasonal let-up, so skin here accumulates a quiet, decade-long dose of ultraviolet that thickens and dulls the surface and scatters uneven epidermal pigment. That accumulated photodamage, not a single summer tan, is what a peel resurfaces. The second fact is biological: melanin-rich Fitzpatrick IV and V skin, the norm across central Kerala, carries reactive melanocytes that respond to an over-deep or over-frequent peel by flooding the area with pigment, leaving it darker than before. Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the single most common complication we correct after non-specialist peels. It is also entirely avoidable, which is why the choice of acid matters less than the discipline of depth, spacing and aftercare.

This is why peel selection at DermaVue is diagnosis-led rather than a fixed menu. Salicylic acid is oil-soluble, so it slips into sebum-blocked pores and suits oily, acne-prone skin. Mandelic acid has the largest molecule of the common acids, so it penetrates slowest and most evenly, which makes it the safest brightening choice for darker skin and post-inflammatory marks. Glycolic acid works faster on dullness and texture but needs a careful hand. Dr. Shilpa Mary Shaji (MBBS, DVD, DNB) and Dr. Celia Hamlet (MD) match the acid, the concentration and the number of sessions to your skin, and for pigment-prone patients the course begins with two to four weeks of priming, a tretinoin and depigmenting preparation that the IADVL guidelines specify and that no salon peel includes. For melasma and broader pigmentation correction, peels are one part of a plan a dermatologist designs, not a standalone fix.

DermaVue Chemical Peels: Clinical SummaryDermaVue Thrissur is a physician-owned dermatology clinic at Ardra Arcade, Punkunnam, where chemical peels are selected as a graded ladder of acids, salicylic, mandelic, glycolic, lactic and TCA, matched by board-certified dermatologists Dr. Shilpa Mary Shaji (MBBS, DVD, DNB) and Dr. Celia Hamlet (MD) to the indication and to the patient's Fitzpatrick IV-V skin. Because melanin-rich skin can answer an over-deep peel with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, depth is kept conservative and every course begins with two to four weeks of priming and strict photoprotection, following IADVL Standard Guidelines of Care for chemical peels. Peels resurface cumulative sun-induced dullness, post-acne marks, melasma and superficial scarring rather than promising a permanent cure. The clinic is rated 4.9 stars across 262+ reviews, part of a 7-clinic network with 7,200+ reviews and a 4.8 weighted average.
Evidence
The IADVL Standard Guidelines of Care for Chemical Peels classify superficial peels as safe in Indian skin and advise against deep peels in Fitzpatrick IV to VI because of the pigment risk (IJDVL). In a 44-patient Indian comparative trial, a salicylic-mandelic peel produced significantly less post-peel hyperpigmentation than a glycolic peel over six fortnightly sessions, with better pigment outcomes at twelve weeks (Garg, Sinha, Sarkar, Dermatologic Surgery, 2009), the evidence behind our preference for mandelic chemistry in darker skin.

FAQ

Chemical Peels in Thrissur: Frequently Asked Questions

Which chemical peel is right for my skin type?
It depends on your concern and your skin tone, not a fixed menu. Salicylic acid, being oil-soluble, suits oily and acne-prone skin. Mandelic acid, with its large slow-penetrating molecule, is safest for darker skin and post-inflammatory marks. Glycolic acid targets dullness and texture, and TCA reaches deeper scars. A dermatologist matches the acid to you.
Are chemical peels safe for dark South Indian (Fitzpatrick IV-V) skin, and how do you prevent pigmentation?
Yes, when depth and aftercare are controlled. Melanin-rich skin can react to an over-deep peel with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, so we favour superficial mandelic and salicylic peels, prime the skin for two to four weeks beforehand, space sessions sensibly, and insist on strict sun protection. The IADVL guidelines advise against deep peels in this skin type for the same reason.
What is the best season for chemical peels in Thrissur?
October to February is ideal, when sun exposure and post-peel pigment risk are lowest, which matters more for a peel than for almost any other procedure. Peels can be done in other months with strict SPF 50+ and reapplication every few hours, but the cooler, lower-UV window makes post-peel photoprotection far easier to keep up, especially for medium-depth peels.
Can chemical peels treat acne scars?
Surface scars and post-acne marks respond well to salicylic and glycolic peels over several sessions. For deep ice-pick scars, TCA CROSS, a targeted spot application of high-strength TCA, raises the scar floor. Broader boxcar and rolling scars usually need fractional CO2 laser or microneedling RF, which we sequence with peels rather than relying on peels alone.
How many peel sessions will I need?
Superficial peels work in a course of four to six sessions, three to four weeks apart, with maintenance afterwards. Medium-depth peels such as TCA need two to four sessions, four to six weeks apart. The exact number depends on whether we are treating dullness, marks, melasma or scarring, and on how your skin responds to the first session.
What is the difference between a medical peel and a salon facial peel?
Concentration, supervision and priming. A dermatologist uses prescription-strength acids with a neutralisation endpoint and medical management if anything reacts, and primes pigment-prone skin for two to four weeks first. Salon peels use low concentrations meant for general glow, with no priming and no plan for post-inflammatory pigmentation. In darker skin, that preparation is the difference between a result and a complication.
Is there downtime after a chemical peel?
Superficial peels cause mild redness for a day or two and light flaking around days three to five, with same-day return to routine. Medium-depth TCA peels involve five to ten days of visible peeling, during which sun must be avoided completely. You receive written recovery instructions before every peel, including the sunscreen schedule that protects the result.
Can peels treat melasma and pigmentation?
Peels are one useful tool for melasma and tan, not a cure. Superficial mandelic and salicylic-mandelic peels lift surface pigment and brighten marks, and in Indian comparative studies glycolic and low-strength TCA both reduced melasma scores meaningfully. We pair peels with prescription topicals and tinted sun protection, because melasma is a relapsing condition that needs ongoing maintenance.
Can I wear makeup after a chemical peel?
After a superficial peel, light mineral makeup is usually fine the next day. After a medium-depth peel, wait until active peeling stops, about five to seven days, before applying anything beyond prescribed moisturiser and sunscreen. Putting makeup over peeling skin invites irritation and, in darker skin, can trigger the pigmentation the peel was meant to reduce.
What does a chemical peel cost at DermaVue Thrissur?
The dermatologist consultation is Rs.300 and includes a skin assessment and a peel recommendation. Per-session pricing varies with the type and depth of peel, and a planned course is usually better value than single sessions. Full, itemised costs are explained before any treatment begins, with no hidden charges.
